Privacy policy for the FAU Community
Registration
By registering you will be added as a member of the FAU network for members, alumni and friends of Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). Registration is voluntary and free of charge.
When you register, you automatically become part of the faculty or department group within the FAU Community that matches your selected department. Alumni (former members of FAU) are also automatically part of the group “FAU Alumni Network”. You can leave the groups yourself at any time (click on “Leave group”).
When you register, please read carefully the conditions of use for the FAU Community portal (online platform). With completing the registration process, you accept the conditions of use. The privacy policy and conditions of use apply equally to the FAU Community Web App. You can cancel your registration at any time by writing to alumni@fau.de, your profile will then be deleted.
Managing your personal data
Within the FAU Community online portal (www.community.fau.de), you can manage your data, share it with other users or hide it. You can specify during the registration process which data you would like to make visible to others. After registration, you can change these settings yourself at any time in your profile. The default settings allow only the basic information ‘first name, last name, relationship to FAU’ to be displayed for other users, but you can also hide your entire profile so that it is only visible to you and the portal administrators. In addition, you can also decide at any time whether you would like to receive information from FAU, such as the alumni newsletter or the FAU magazine.
Use of your data
- Sending one welcome letter by post to the postal address you have given
- Sending information, usually about events, training courses and news from FAU (e.g. newsletters, University magazine)
- Sending sporadic e-mail notifications to the address you have given e.g. with information on FAU Community updates
- Connecting former fellow students and colleagues, former/current students, funding providers/students; Members’ data is only passed on with their explicit consent
- Allowing FAU to contact members, alumni and friends of the University, e.g. with a request to speak at events or take part in an interview.
Access to the FAU Community
The portal can only be accessed via the internet using a personal user name and password. The connection is made via SSL encryption and the server is protected by a firewall. The FAU Community web app can also only be used after registration has been completed on the FAU Community website (www.community.fau.de/register) with your personal username and password.
Data transfer
Your data are protected by SSL encryption during transfer to FAU servers. This is an encryption process which is commonly used to transfer credit card numbers, for example, when shopping online.
Processing and storing your data
The personal data you submit are stored in FAU’s electronic database and used solely in the context of the permission you have granted and not passed on to third parties. The FAU Community portal is operated on protected servers on site at the University at the Erlangen Regional Computing Centre. We have a job processing contract with our software provider Matoma GmbH in accordance with new data protection regulations (GDPR).
Withdrawal of consent and deleting your data
You can withdraw your consent for the future use of your data at any time. After FAU Alumni Management receive your withdrawal of consent, (alumni@fau.de) your data will be deleted within 14 days. User profiles with obsolete address data will also be deleted if the user does not reply within six weeks of being contacted by the operator of the FAU Community.
By registering in the FAU Community portal, you agree that your data are stored and used according to the conditions listed above.
